Meet the Team: Tony Molloy, Operations Manager
Meet Tony Molloy, Operations Manager. Tony has worked for HSM for seven years and prides himself on his proactive approach to work. In his spare time, Tony enjoys socialising with friends and family, watching rugby and Formula 1, and honing his skills on the golf course!
What does your role involve?
Over the seven years I’ve worked for HSM, I’ve seen the company grow, evolve, and invest in both cutting-edge machinery and its people. As Operations Manager, my role is all about keeping things running smoothly on the shop floor, ensuring production is efficient, and making sure we hit our targets. That means overseeing processes, troubleshooting any issues that arise (whether that’s a machine misbehaving or a logistical challenge), and making sure we’re continuously improving. In short, if something needs organising, fixing, or pushing forward, I’m on it!
What is your career background prior to HSM?
Before joining HSM, I was a fabricator welder, cutting my teeth in the trade at Portsmouth Dockyard, where I worked on Type 45 destroyers, so you could say I’ve had experience building things that are built to last! From there, I worked in several fabrication companies across different sectors, from marine and defence to structural steel and general fabrication. This wide-ranging experience has given me a solid understanding of manufacturing and problem-solving, which I use daily in my role at HSM.
What are the most rewarding and challenging parts of your role?
The most rewarding part of my job is definitely building strong relationships with both new and existing customers. Seeing them place their trust in us, knowing we deliver quality work time and time again, is a great feeling. I also love seeing the company grow; whether it’s investing in new machinery, expanding our capabilities, or developing our team.
The most challenging part is the dreaded KPIs! Keeping production on schedule, ensuring we meet targets, and balancing efficiency with quality isn’t always easy, especially in a fast-paced environment. Hitting lead times, reducing waste, and improving workflow are all part of the daily juggle, but I do love a challenge!
What skills do you pride yourself on?
I’d say being proactive is one of my biggest strengths. I’m always looking ahead, identifying potential problems before they happen, and keeping everything moving. I also love problem-solving, whether it’s a tricky fabrication issue, a machine throwing a tantrum, or a process that needs fine-tuning. If there’s a way to make something better, I’ll find it!
What are your aims for the coming year?
My goal is to continue being a key team member at HSM and play my part in the company’s growth plans. We have some exciting developments ahead, and I want to make sure we keep everything on track and moving forward. On a personal level, I want to keep improving in my role, pushing myself to be the best I can be, and making sure I’m always performing at my best.
What support/development opportunities have you received since joining?
At HSM, we believe development isn’t just for athletes, business coaching is just as important! We work with Action Coach, who provides us with valuable business coaching, and I’m always looking for the next course or training opportunity to help both myself and the company improve. HSM invests in its people, and that’s something I really appreciate.
Why should people use HSM's services above others?
Because we genuinely care about our customers’ success. We see ourselves as partners rather than just suppliers, and we’ll always go the extra mile to help our customers achieve their goals. Our ‘one-stop shop’ approach means we can handle projects from start to finish, ensuring quality, efficiency, and on-time delivery. Plus, with our depth of experience and continuous investment in the latest technology, you’re in safe hands.
Why is HSM a great place to work?
The team spirit at HSM is second to none - it’s the best I’ve experienced in my career. We’re a tight-knit group who all work towards the same goal, and no two days are ever the same. The variety, the teamwork, and the constant drive for improvement make it an exciting place to be. There’s always a challenge to tackle, but there’s also a great sense of camaraderie, which makes even the busiest days enjoyable.
