Meet the Team: Mo Cleife, Quality Inspector
Meet Mo Cleife, Quality Inspector. Mo came out of retirement to return to HSM this year to help out and is enjoying being part of the team again. Outside of work Mo enjoys supporting Portsmouth FC; as a season ticket holder she attends every home match. She also enjoys scooter rallies and travelling, especially cruises. Last year she visited Iceland and this year she’ll be heading to Italy and Greece.
You came out of retirement to return to HSM - what’s the story there?
I worked for HSM from 2022-2024 but then left and retired shortly after. When I heard that the company was really busy and in need of an extra pair of hands, I offered to come out of retirement and rejoin the team! If I’m honest I was a little bored being retired full time, so the offer of three mornings a week in my old role was very appealing!
I returned to the same role that I had done previously and it’s lovely to be back. So many familiar faces and lots of welcome-back hugs - everyone is so nice, it’s a great place to be.
What does your role involve?
The purpose of my role is to check every single component that HSM produces, to ensure it is exactly as it should be. I make sure that each part is the correct material, size, finish etc to ensure that every order is fulfilled correctly. Every item undergoes a visual inspection, with one item from each order also undergoing dimensional checks to ensure the sizings are spot on.
We also conduct FAIR - First Article Inspection Reports - on some items, which can be time-consuming, but it’s another way of ensuring quality in all we do. I conducted a measurement check on an item the other day and it took nine hours to check all the dimensions as it was a very intricate item!
The role is very varied and each day is different - one day I might spend my whole shift checking one order, and the next I could process up to 10 orders in one shift! It depends what the orders are and whether the checks are just visual or whether more is required. The variety certainly keeps it interesting!
What’s your career background and what are your aims for the coming year?
I worked in quality for many years, a variety of roles in the pharmaceutical and medical sectors, dealing with both plastic and metal. My aim for the coming year is to continue doing a good job, and to help out for as long as I’m needed.
What are the most rewarding and challenging parts of your role?
The biggest challenge is that there can be a lot of measurements on one item so it can take a long time to complete the measurement checks as we use handheld measuring devices. But at the same time, that’s also the most rewarding bit! When you’ve measured everything thoroughly and it's all accurate, knowing you've sent the order out to the customer with everything as it should be, that’s very rewarding!
If an item is identified as being incorrect on inspection, we respond immediately by conducting a Corrective Action Report and passing it back to the production team to put it right. It then comes back to us for a second check. Our system ensures that nothing leaves the premises unless it’s 100% correct.
What support have you received?
When I first joined the company I was given a general induction as well as a lot of additional support. I learned about the different fabrication techniques as well as the different types of metal finishing so that I was familiar with the materials and processes, and it was great to expand my knowledge in this way.
Why should people use HSM's services above others?
Everyone gives 100% here. We all take pride in our work and it results in us sending out top quality products each and every time, so you always know that whatever you order will be spot on.
Why is HSM a great place to work?
Everyone is so friendly and supportive, we’re like one big family here! It’s a lovely place to be - so much so that I couldn’t stay away!
