Meet the Team: Megan Link, Accounts & HR Assistant

Meet Megan Link, Accounts & HR Assistant. Megan joined HSM in January and enjoys the variety of her role and being part of the team. Outside of work her two children keep her busy, often at a farm or soft play! When off mum duty, she enjoys socialising with friends at live music or comedy gigs, and walks along the beach.

What does your role involve?

My role as Accounts & HR Assistant is extremely varied. The accounts side of the role sees me carrying out supplier bank reconciliations, dealing with purchasing and customer invoicing, taking care of quarterly VAT returns, preparing and assisting with supplier payment scheduling and answering the phone.

The HR aspect involves building relationships with the team, preparing new employee paperwork, maintaining HR records, ensuring we are up-to-date with compliance and supporting the Accounts and HR Manager.

What is your career background?

I started as an Accounts Apprentice 12 years ago. During my career I’ve gained experience across all aspects of finance from invoicing to management accounting. I have a love for numbers and Excel - they tell a story of their own. The last nine years of my career have been spent in the manufacturing industry; experience that is proving invaluable to my role here.

What are the most rewarding and challenging parts of your role?

The most rewarding aspect of my role is being part of the team and feeling supported in my role; any ideas I have are listened to and encouraged, which is lovely.

The most challenging part of my role is ensuring our accounting system, Sage, is up-to-date, without missing any costs on the ledger – but that’s ok as I like a challenge!

What are your aims for the coming year?

I plan to assist in bringing payroll in-house; I have the knowledge and experience to do this and payroll being in-house will bring significant time and cost savings with it. I also plan to continue extending my knowledge with a range of e-learning courses.

What support / development opportunities have you received since joining?

Since joining HSM I’ve completed a two-day training course in First Aid, which is a great skill to have. I’ve also learned how to create KPIs, which I can track, monitor and share with the management team. In the coming weeks I will spend a day shadowing our workshop and dispatch teams to gain firsthand understanding of the production process, which will be very useful in my role.

Why should people use HSM's services above others?

HSM is well-known in both the local community and the metal fabrication industry. HSM has been in business for over 85 years and with that comes experience, knowledge and expertise, enabling us to provide superior services to our customers.

Why is HSM a great place to work?

HSM is a great place to work as it’s super friendly. This company has gone from strength to strength, from where it started, to where it is now and how it continues to grow. The whole team shares the same goal: to continue delivering high quality metal fabrications to our customers.

It’s great to walk into the workshop and see everyone working hard, fabricating products using exceptional machinery, extensive knowledge and a range of skills - that’s where the magic happens. I’m one of the ‘behind the scenes’ workers and we all need to carry out our part successfully to ensure the business runs smoothly. If any challenges come our way, we muck in together to resolve them.
