Meet the Team: Meet John Ryder, Production Manager
Meet John Ryder, Production Manager. John joined HSM in May, bringing with him a wealth of experience from the engineering trade as well as management roles. Outside of work he enjoys a round of golf, playing in his band and spending time with his family.
What does your role involve?
As Production Manager, there’s obviously a lot of management of projects as they progress down the production line. I manage the process from start to finish, ensuring projects remain on time and on budget. I oversee everything, keeping jobs on track and keeping the customer informed every step of the way. Excellent customer service is key, and I’m the one keeping in touch and answering any questions they have along the way.
I also have a lot of involvement in health and safety, HR and scheduling - there’s a lot of organising involved. I’m on-hand to help and support the team if they need it, and to ensure everything is ticking along as it should be and that the staff know what’s expected of them.
What's your career background?
I’m a toolmaker by trade, with experience in a range of roles. I completed six years of engineering training, including an HNC and a diploma in operations management. I’ve held a variety of roles, from those on the shop floor, right up to Managing Director.
What skills do you pride yourself on?
My people skills. These skills are essential for interacting with the team and the customers. I work closely with the guys in the workshop to ensure they know what’s expected of them and what needs to be done. If any member of the team is experiencing issues, I’ll support them to ensure they are not out of their depth. It’s all about helping the team so that we can get the best results for both them and the customer.
I also keep in touch with our customers regularly, letting them know how the job is going, managing their expectations and ensuring they are happy with their HSM experience.
What are the most rewarding parts of your role?
I really enjoy the problem-solving aspect of the role. When an issue arises and you are able to solve a problem for a customer, that's pretty cool. Often, customers know they need something and what it is, but are unsure of how to get there, and that’s where we come in.
What are the most challenging parts of your role?
Keeping the production line running smoothly when you come up against challenges or resource issues such as machine breakdowns and staff holidays. We always pull together as a team and support each other to ensure that when challenges occur, we still achieve a great outcome for our customers.
What support have you received since joining?
I’ve received great support from both the HR provider and my colleagues. The whole team has been supportive since I joined, coming forward and offering help if I’ve needed it, which made me feel welcome from day one.
Why should people use HSM's services above others?
At HSM we’re passionate about what we do and we always prioritise customer service. We deliver over and above to ensure the customer gets what they need each and every time.
Why is HSM a great place to work?
The support is there for everyone - the management team genuinely wants you to grow and thrive in your role, and beyond. The company fosters a culture of support and we all help each other - and more than that, we want to help each other, which is great.
